Get Relief From Sciatica Pain

Sciatica is a painful condition generally characterized by compression or dysfunction of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and travels down into the back of the leg all the way into the foot.  Many people find that living with sciatica can be incredibly difficult. It can be an extremely debilitating condition that can disrupt your everyday activities. Left unchecked, the nerve could become permanently damaged. So, if your sciatica has become a problem, it’s important to get it checked out from the team at Cornerstone Chiropractic.

Symptoms of Sciatica

The most tell-tale sign of sciatica is pain that goes from your lower back all the way down your legs. The pain can be dull and achy, or it can be piercing like a jolt of electricity. However, other symptoms come with sciatica, especially when it is left untreated for long periods of time. Some of the symptoms you should look out for include:

  • Burning or tingling down into the back of the leg.
  • Pins and needles in the glutes and back portion of the leg.
  • Muscle weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot.
  • Constant pain on one side of the buttocks.
  • Shooting pain from the low back into the buttock region.
  • Difficulty going from seated to standing.
  • Leg and or foot numbness.

If you are dealing with symptoms of sciatica, the team at Cornerstone Chiropractic has helped many patients just like you get well. Make sure to call today to schedule your evaluation!

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica can be caused by several different conditions including

  • Degenerative disc disease- When the discs in the spine wear down, the nerve passageway becomes much narrower. This can pinch the sciatic nerves as they leave the spine.
  • Spinal stenosis- When there is an abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal, it reduces the available space for the spinal cord and nerves, causing pressure on the nerves.
  • Spondylolisthesis- When one vertebra slips out of line with the one above it, the opening where the nerve exits is narrowed and can pinch the sciatic nerve.
  • Osteoarthritis-Jagged edges of bone can form in spines, compressing lower back nerves.
  • Injury to the lumbar spine or sciatic nerve

How A Chiropractor in Sioux City Can Help With Sciatica

Sciatica pain can be debilitating, and needs to be taken care of – it will not go away by itself. Left untreated, sciatica can lead to permanent damage to the sciatica nerve. This could result in loss of feeling in the affected leg.

Chiropractic care is considered a holistic all-natural method of healthcare. At Cornerstone Chiropractic Clinic, we focus on care for your whole body and not just the specific area of your pain.

What to expect at your chiropractic appointment

If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, you might be wondering what to expect on your first visit. When you visit Cornerstone Chiropractic Health Center to seek treatment for your sciatica, you will fill out paperwork that will help us learn more about your condition. Next, you will meet with the chiropractor for a detailed consultation and physical examination.

1

Initial Evaluation

This stage of the appointment is important because treatment is often ineffective without proper diagnosis. At Cornerstone, we thoroughly evaluate our patients to determine the cause of your sciatica. Our detailed assessment will determine the exact type of treatment that is necessary for your sciatica.

2

Treatment

The type of treatment provided depends on the cause of your sciatica. Based on the results of the initial evaluation, the doctor will go over treatment recommendations.

Treatment may include:

  • Spinal adjustments to help restore misaligned vertebrae.. Spinal adjustment helps reduce nerve irritability responsible for inflammation, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica.
  • Rehabilitative stretches and strengthening exercises to address any muscular imbalances throughout the body.
  • Ice/cold therapies to reduce inflammation and control pain.
3

Post-Treatment Care

Some of the recommendations you might get after your session includes:

  • Lifestyle adjustments.
  • Diet changes, addition or removal of certain foods.
  • Exercises.
  • Follow-up treatments and recommendations to help reduce the issues over time.
