Drinking fresh water

Why It's Important to Drink Water After Seeing a Chiropractor

If you’ve already begun receiving chiropractic treatment as part of your personal health journey, then you have probably already had the chance to experience chronic pain relief, greater flexibility in your daily life, and the mental reassurance of keeping your joints and spine healthy.

However, the health benefits of chiropractic treatment don’t exist in a vacuum. Just like with any other treatment plan, you owe it to yourself and to your chiropractor to keep healthy outside of your regular appointments.

It’s easy enough to overlook, but drinking plenty of water is just the sort of thing you need to do after visiting a chiropractor.

Why You Should Stay Hydrated

Since you were a child, you’ve known that humans need water just to survive. Beyond mere survival, however, a healthy level of hydration is important for you to thrive.

According to Harvard’s School of Public Health, the benefits of sufficient water intake include:

  • Proper body temperature regulation
  • Lubricated joints
  • Infection prevention
  • Proper delivery of nutrition to cells
  • Organ functionality
  • Superior sleep quality
  • Improved mood and cognition

You’d probably be willing to shell out big bucks to receive all of those benefits from a nutritional supplement or food item. So why wouldn’t you get those perks by drinking lots of water, which is practically free?

Listen to Your Body!

How much water you should drink will vary from person to person. According to the Mayo Clinic, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has determined that the average man should drink approximately 15.5 cups of water per day, while the average woman should drink about 11.5 cups of water per day.

However, people who sweat a lot (such as excessive water loss through regular exercise or manual labor), live in hot or humid environments, or are pregnant or breastfeeding need to drink an above-average level of water. Plus, physically larger people need to drink more than physically smaller people.

Fortunately, you don’t just need to lug a bottle of water with you everywhere to keep your body hydrated (though that wouldn’t be a terrible idea!). You can get water from beverages such as juices, tea, or even coffee, as well as from the food you eat.

The most important thing is to listen to your body. Simply put, whenever you feel thirsty, have some water or another hydrating fluid!

Follow Your Chiropractor’s Advice

Chiropractors aren’t there just to provide proper alignment and therapy, though that is certainly their main role! Chiropractors can also offer wellness advice and a treatment plan to make sure that you maintain the healing process in the world outside of your appointments.

For example, if your chiropractor is offering tips on improving your joint mobility, he or she may recommend that you drink water after adjustment has been made on your spine. Your chiropractor may also recommend that you reach an adequate water intake to improve your sleep quality and thereby increase your energy levels.

Remember that your chiropractor’s goal is for you to be healthy for the rest of your life. That includes chiropractic adjustments over time, but it also includes advice about proper rest, physical activity and exercise, a healthy diet, and maintaining proper hydration and healthy water consumption outside of the chiropractic office.
